These are the notes from our Numerology workshop we held on November 12, 2004, by Rev. Dawn Earthsong.
What is numerology?
Ancient art of using numbers for divination and analysis of the inner meanings of words and numbers.
It is believed that all things that exist are held to have a numerical value. Letters are translated into numbers and analyzed in various ways – from this analysis the inner nature of the word is said to be revealed, and to shed additional insight upon its generally understood meaning.
Numerology is a popular way of doing character analysis based upon a persons name and or birthdate.
2 Forms of Numerology:
Hebrew system – based on the number 6.
- developed by the Cabalists for use with the Hebrew alphabet
- Judeo-Christian mystics considered Hebrew to be the Language of God
Pythagorean system – based on the number 9
- Based on the Greek alphabet
- Adapted through Latin to be used with many other alphabets
- Pythagorean system is based in part on the musical scale
- Mathematical relationships between its notes
- Believed each note or vibrational frequency corresponds to a number
- All things that exist have a vibrational frequency
- Thus they believed that numbers, representing vibrational frequencies, were the key to understanding all things
- Consequently all things have a number and can be understood through that number
- This ties directly into the idea of Correspondences
- Each thing corresponds to a sound, color, number, planet, etc
- Correspondences illustrating the idea that ‘As Above So Below”…all things reflect the Divine Plan and may be understood through each other.
- Correspondences are one of the cornerstones of Wiccan thought. (Sympathy magick)
Ennead – The 9 numbers in the Pythagorean system of numerology, or Company of 9, which represent the 9 Monads which the Goddess separated off from Herself in order to enter the world of matter and thence reunite with the God, and which form the spiritual essence of the universe, each being a microcosmic aspect of the Goddess.
The qualities of the 9 numbers of the Ennead represent the unfolding nature of the Goddess as She moved through the process of creation.
The Numerological value of any word is arrived at by first converting its letters into their numerical equivalents, and then adding them together. If the sum arrived at has more than one digit, it is further reduced by adding the digits of the sum together until the outcome is a single digit. Unless the number should be a Master Number (11,22,33…..) In the case of Master numbers, the meaning of the double digit is more important than the single digit sum it reduces to.
Pass our sheets on the meaning of the numbers.
Word Analysis:
Every word has a Numerological value which tells you many things about the word and the concept it represents. These things are used to add further meanings to the interpretation of the word, and also to judge the suitability and potential success of words being chosen for names of businesses, titles of books, etc. ……
3 Ways of Examining Words:
- Add all letters together and reduce to a single digit or Master number = overall qualities and primary Numerological meaning of the word.
- Vowels – indicate the internal, emotional aspect of the word
- Consonants – indicates the external, practical qualities of the word
